For Derek Aylward, everything starts with drawing. The freedom and ease of this medium perfectly suit the artist, who never knows where he is about to go and what scenes will emerge on paper as he wrestles with giving life to the ideas and images bouncing around his head. The artist's daily drawing practice helps to relieve some of the stuck-feelings and second guessing that can arise when painting, and the inherently less-precious nature of working on paper allows him to flow intuitively with unlimited possibilities.
Day Drawing No. 1 organizes a new series of these drawings and sketches, which help decode Aylward's complex visual language and spontaneous approaches to image making. With the release of the zine, we are pleased to also offer the original drawings that are reproduced in the booklet as pages and spreads. You can buy a zine, and you can add a work of art into your collection while you're at it.
